Excerpt – Deceptive Histories By Eric Gober
“So were your ancestors Russian?” he asked.
The guy shrugged. “Beats me. I’m a mongrel with no pedigree, a mix of things that don’t match at all.”
“You too, huh?” Mike joshed.
“You look beautifully put together to me.”
When Mike opened his mouth but nothing came out for half an eternity because he was too bewitched to reply, the guy’s face reddened and he returned his attention to surfboards. “Sorry… I misread you. Are you and your girlfriend renting boards?”
“You read him perfectly,” Svenja said and turned to Mike. “Hast du die Sprache verloren? Er mag dich.”
“You think so?”
“Duh. Let me have your keys. I’ll see you at home.”
“What am I supposed to do, walk?”
“He’ll give you a ride.” Svenja winked at the guy. “Right?”
“Sure, if he’ll bodyboard with me.”
“Okay, awesome,” Mike said.
The guy fingered a nicely contoured ivory board with a slick bottom. “Do you like 4Play?”
Mike grinned. “Love it.”
“Ew, gross.” Svenja held out her palm. “Give me the keys.”
Mike handed them over.
“Later, dudes.” She flashed them a peace sign and left.
Mike and the guy went inside Wavehouse, and each selected a bodyboard to rent. Mike watched as the guy untangled the wrist leash connected to his. He suddenly seemed so serious, causing Mike to be serious, too, and wonder what their afternoon in the ocean would lead to. A few kisses in the surf, followed by a hasty, permanent goodbye? Or would their fates entangle?
